Bhaktapur is a medieval Newar town, located in the Kathmandu valley approximately 20km east of Kathmandu. From time immemorial it lay on the ancient trade route between Tibet and India, making the town rich and prosperous. It is the third largest city in the Kathmandu valley and was the capital of Nepal during the great Malla Kingdom until the later half of the 15th century.

The austere and enduring remains of the once magnificent city of Hampi are scattered throughout the makeshift town that has sprung up around the site. Ancient temples and statues can be found far beyond the village limits. The vast expanse of the city alone is attestation to the grandeur of the once capital of Vijayanagar: the last of the great Hindu kingdoms of South India.
